While college admissions officials will often tout the holistic approach they use in making decisions, a good SAT score often can make or your break your acceptance.

While a “good SAT score” is extremely important in the college application process, a “good SAT score” is different for every student. The test makers have built the test so that the median score is around 500 for all three sections. This means that roughly half of all the students who take the SAT score above and below a 500 in each of the three sections. In order to determine what a “good score” is for you, you will need you need to consider the score ranges of the schools you are interested in.

For many state schools and less competitive private schools, a student should shoot for scores in the mid 500s and a combined score above a 1600.

For most selective public and private schools, a good score is usually above a 600 in all three sections or a combined score above a 1900.

For top tier schools, a good score is usually above a 700 in all three sections or a combined score over 2200.

If you create a profile on mindfish.com, you will be able to select the schools you are interested in and see the scores you need to shoot for. While it is tempting to look at the low number of a school’s score range when deciding what score you need, you need to consider that most students on the low side of the range have extraordinary circumstances surrounding their acceptances. Consequently, we have listed the mean of the schools scores so that you can try and shoot for the upper 50% of a school’s score range.

Below are a few top schools and their corresponding SAT score ranges. Focus on achieving the scores you need for the colleges you are interested in and avoid comparing your scores to your friends’ scores when deciding if you have a “good score” is.

Duke

A student's score improvement is contingent on many factors, but motivation and amount of study time are the most significant. With diligent effort (i.e. attentive study and consistent practice over a period of 6 to 8 weeks) most students can expect to realize score improvements of around 200 points. Because standardized tests require a specific style of thinking, steady practice is the surest way to develop stronger testing skills. With hard work and a concrete goal, most students can achieve their objectives.

College Options

I am planning on going to the University of Findlay, and I know that you cannot include all colleges in your options, however I can not set any goals for myself because Findlay is not on the list.

Should you guess on the SAT?

Most students incorrectly think that the SAT penalizes guessing. While the SAT does take off a quarter point for each incorrect answer, this should not be looked at as a penalty.

If over the course of an SAT you decided to leave five questions blank you would receive 0 points for those five questions. On the other hand, if you guessed without any confidence on the same five questions, you would, on average, get one question right and four questions wrong. The SAT would reward you with one point for the correct answer and -.25 points for each of the incorrect answers. The combined total for the five questions would still be zero. Thus, the guessing penalty doesn’t actually penalize you for guessing.

If you follow the Mindfish approach, you will be able to eliminate two or three answers on every question, and as a result you would expect to get more than 1/5 of your guesses correct. Consequently, it is ALWAYS in your best interest to guess if you can eliminate answers! Just make sure you choose answers that make logical sense and don’t be afraid to pick words you don’t know on the sentence completion questions.

How is the SAT scored?

The SAT consists of three sections: Math, Reading, and Writing. Each section is scored out of a total 800 points possible. Therefore, the total possible score is 2400. Students actually receive 200 points on each section by default, so the score range for each section is really 200 - 800 points.

The national average SAT score tends to hover around 500 on each section, or a total score of 1500.

The following is the way scores are calculated on the test:

Each correct answer = +1 point

Each incorrect answer = -.25 points

Each answer left blank = 0 points

These points are tallied up to determine a student's "Raw Score" on the section. The raw score is then converted to a real SAT score (200 - 800) by using a chart like the one below.

While you might think you need to be in the stated range to be accepted, this is usually not the case. Schools make exceptions for many of their athletes and special circumstance students. Consequently, the score range is actually not a valid representation of the scores needed for traditional acceptance.

For example, if you are looking at a school that displays an SAT math range of 620 – 720, do not assume that a 630 will be acceptable. This is NOT a good idea! While there is value in getting early test experience, there are better, safer, and cheaper ways to do it.

1. Students often struggle unnecessarily without any preparation, and as a result they will develop a poor sense of confidence if their scores come back lower than expected. This can often work against them when they begin to prepare during their junior year.

2. Despite the score choice policy offered by the SAT and the ACT, highly selective schools on both the East and the West coast now require students to send ALL of their scores. This means that a student would have to send in his low sophomore score along with any higher scores.

3. Both the ACT and the SAT offer official practice tests; "The Official SAT Study Guide" and "The Real ACT Prep Guide" provide several actual practice tests along with answer keys and general preparation advice. In order to get the most out of a simulated practice test, make sure your student takes the test in one sitting in a distraction free environment.

What is SAT "Score Choice?"

About a year and a half ago, the College Board introduced Score Choice. This new score reporting policy allows students to select which SAT scores they send to colleges. Basically, students can take the test multiple times and select to send the scores from the test date with the better results. This policy mirrors what has always been the policy for the ACT.

Although Score Choice seems like a boon for students who take the test more than once, the policy should be viewed with some skepticism by some parents and students. Several schools (including Yale and Stanford) have publicly stated that they will not accept Score Choice and still want to see all of a student's test scores.

Click here to read more about Score Choice on the College Board website.

When should my student take the SAT?

In the old days, high schools juniors would take the SAT once in May and be done with it. This is no longer the case.

Most students end up taking the SAT twice. And, with the new Score
Choice policy from the College Board, many student will be able to
choose which test scores to submit to colleges. What this means is
that it's usually a good idea for students to take the test early in
the second semester of junior year.

My overall philosophy with test prep scheduling is that the student
should try to finish the process by the summer after junior year. There
are no SAT tests offered during the summer. Because of this students
tend to lose a lot of momentum during the summer and have to spend a
significant amount of time and energy refreshing old material after the
summer.

I am a proponent of taking the test in January. The January test
date is nice and early and allows students plenty of time get their
scores back, learn from the experience, and prepare for another test
date later in the semester. Also, the January test is one of only two
tests per year for which the College Board offers their "Question and
Answer Service." This service allows you to order a copy of the
January test. It usually takes 6 to 8 weeks to receive the test copy in
the mail, but once you have it, it is the best tool for students to
learn from their SAT experience and prepare for the next test. The
only other test for which this service is offered is the May SAT.

Do you get an email when I post in this forum???

Hello there...please let me know.

Also, if you fan our Video

Facebook stream. Check it out at: www.facebook.com/videovocab

You won’t be able to see
your mindfish profile and SAT Scorecard on Facebook. But, if you link your accounts with Facebook Connect, all of
your SAT Quest data from Facebook will be beamed over to mindfish.com to help
build your study plan and score predictions.

Facebook Connect is a tool
that allows you to link your Facebook account to your account on
mindfish.com.
Facebook Connect has two
sweet features:

1. You can log into
mindfish.com with your Facebook account. No new password to create and
remember.

2. If you play SAT Quest on
Facebook, all of your game data and study information will be sent over to
mindfish to help build your test prep plan.

Sounds good! Take me to my profile so I can link my
mindfish and Facebook accounts!

“Your Goal” in each of the
three SAT subjects (Reading, Math, Writing) is based on the schools that you

You will see three scores
(Reading, Math, Writing) for each school in your “Schools” widget. Each score is the average score of
incoming freshman for last year.
To build your goals on your SAT Scorecard, we take the highest average
score in each subject from the schools you select.

“Projected Score” is an estimate based on your engagement
with SAT Quest. We take your
correct and incorrect answers and run them through some complicated equations
to build “Projected Score.” We
factor in your accuracy, a question’s difficulty level, the percentage of
certain question types on the actual SAT and several other pieces of data to
come up with our best guess at your SAT score.

You may notice a green and red “Projected Range” stripe on your
scorecard. As you play SAT Quest more, this range will narrow. Basically, the more you play, the more
accurately we’re able to estimate your SAT Score. So, get crackin’!
