Absolute Value

Table of Contents

  1. Distance from Zero
  2. Practice:

Description:

Absolute Value questions ask you to solve equations involving the absolute value symbol. |-3| = 3

Approach:

These questions require you to know that an absolute value symbol makes whatever is inside of it positive.
Additionally you must remember that when an absolute value symbol is combined within an inequality you must solve two equations.

1) Distance from Zero

The absolute value of a number refers to the number’s distance from zero. For example, the absolute value of -2 is 2, and the absolute value of 2 is also 2.

You may find it helpful to think about absolute value in terms of a standard number line:

-1 and 1 are the same distance from 0, and thus their absolute values are the same as well (both 1).

2) Practice:

  • |5 - 9| = ?
  • |16 - 20| = ?
