Description:

Power questions test your knowledge of three power rules used with exponents.

Approach:

Memorize the these three rules and apply them as needed:

  1. When multiplying add the exponents
  2. When dividing subtract the exponents
  3. When a power is raised to a power, multiply the exponents.

 


1) Powers (MADS)

When multiplying or dividing variables with powers remember the acronym MADS.

  • When multiplying common bases, add the powers:
    x2 * x3 = x5
  • When dividing common bases, subtract the powers:
    x5x2 = x3
  • When a power is raised to a power multiply the powers:
    (x2)3 = x6

2) Practice:

  • x2 * x5 = ?
  • x2x7 = ?
  • (x13)3 =?
