Translation

Description:

Translation questions ask you to translate a verbal statement into a mathematical equation and solve it.

Approach:

Carefully translate the verbal question into a mathematical expression. Be aware that the order in which a question's variables and numbers are written may not match the correct order for the equivalent mathematical expression.

2) Try translating this mathematical statement:

What percent of 50 percent of 20 is 25 percent of 160?

This expression should be translated into x⁄100 * 50⁄100 = 25⁄100 * 160

Solving for x should yield x = 400%

3) Practice:

  • What percent of 10 percent of 90 is 3 percent of 100?
  • If four less than a number is equal to six more than twice the number, what is the number?
