Winter Break Tips

With winter break quickly arriving, it is important for students to have a solid study plan in place.  While the break is a time to relax, being completely unengaged with your studies can lead to regression. Regressing too much will mean that you have more work to do in the spring.  With that in mind, here are a few tips to keep engaged with your studies so that you are ready to hit the ground running in January.

Read

Reading has countless benefits. Great books can supercharge your verbal skills and vocabulary, enhance your general knowledge, spark curiosity about the world, and even foster empathy. While standardized tests like the SAT and ACT focus on a narrower set of skills than the vast array nurtured by reading, students who read challenging books can see a real boost to their testing skills.

Review

During winter break, even though schools are out, it is important for students to keep up with their studies. If you’re working with a tutor for test prep, you can look over the topics and strategies you’ve reviewed together and maybe even work through a practice test on your own.  For school, if there’s a subject you struggled with in the fall semester, take some time to look over what you’ve done. With a bit of review, you can start the new year ready to go instead of needing to catch up on things you might’ve forgotten.

Relax

Although it’s important to review over the break, it’s also important to relax and do things that you enjoy.  Whether it be video games, hiking, reading a good book (see above), or even just watching Netflix, take some time for yourself to recharge before the spring semester. This can help give you the momentum you need to be successful in the new year.
