How to Register for the SAT

The first step to taking the SAT is to register for the SAT. Most students will register for the SAT online, but you can also register for the SAT by mail. The College Board website has a wealth of information about registering for the test.

When to Register for the SAT?

SAT registration deadlines are generally about one month before the test date. That said, popular SAT test dates often fill up quickly, so it’s a good idea to register as soon as you determine your test date. There are also late SAT registration deadlines which incur an additional fee. You can view upcoming SAT test dates, registration deadlines, and late registration deadlines here.

What test date is right for you? Think about your other commitments in terms of academics, athletics, or extracurriculars. Most students will benefit from having 8 to 15 weeks to prepare before the test, so take time to study into account as well.

What You Will Need to Register for the SAT

Have your photo ID handy as well as a form of payment (usually a credit card).

How to Register for the SAT Online

Sign into your College Board account here. Enter your full name, date of birth, mailing address and other information. Make sure this information matches what is on your photo ID.

Answer the optional questions about yourself, if you would like to. Answering the optional questions is not required, but it may be helpful if you would like colleges and organizations to be able to search for you.

Decide whether you would like to register for the SAT essay portion. Unsure if you should take the SAT essay? We have a helpful guide that you can access here. You can also consult with one of our tutors to determine the best approach to the essay for you.

Next, upload a photo that meets the College Board’s requirements. Your face should be centered, in focus, clearly visible, and you should be the only person in the photo). When you have finished, save a PDF of your admissions ticket and print a copy as well.

If you are using a fee waiver, enter the identification number printed on your fee waiver card. If you are testing with accommodations, enter the SSD number on your eligibility letter.

How to Register for the SAT by Mail

Some students have circumstances that make it necessary to register for the SAT by mail instead of online. The College Board may require registration by mail for students who are:

  • Requesting a testing location closer to your home (if you live more than 75 miles from the nearest testing center)
  • Requesting Sunday testing
  • Paying by check or money order
  • Twelve years old or younger
  • Unable to upload a digital photo
  • Registering through an SAT international representative

To register for the SAT by mail, you will need a copy of the Student Registration Booklet for the SAT and SAT Subject Tests. Ask your counselor for a copy of this booklet. Complete the form and return it to the College Board inside the accompanying envelope. Ensure you send the booklet earlier enough to allow arrival before the registration deadline.
