What Families Can Do Now

There’s no one-size-fits-all checklist but there are foundational moves that every family with an IEP or 504 should be considering before the first day of school. Some of those include:

• Reviewing whether the plan reflects your child’s current needs
• Confirming that all teachers and service providers have access to the plan
• Flagging any new challenges that emerged over the summer
• Asking how accommodations like extended time, breaks, or modified assignments will actually look in practice this year
• Building in tools for executive function support (especially for middle and high schoolers)

But here’s the thing: doing all of this alone is what burns parents out. You shouldn’t have to become an expert in IDEA law, school district protocols, and educational psychology just to ensure your child has what they need to learn.
