What is the Difference Between AP Calculus AB & BC?

Many students initially believe that the AP Calculus BC exam is the more difficult of the two exams. However, these two Calculus exams differ in scope rather than in their complexity. Calculus BC is only widely considered more advanced because it covers more material, not the complexity.

The AP Calculus AB exam covers the equivalent of one semester of college calculus. As such, the exam’s content focuses on derivatives, limits, definite integrals, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.

Calculus BC, on the other hand, covers a full year of college-level calculus. In addition to topics from Calculus AB, the AP Calculus BC exam covers polar graphs with derivatives, improper integrals, partial functions, Euler’s method, Polar curves, parametric curves, Geometric series, Harmonic series, Taylor series, Power series, logistical growth models, and more.

How are the AP Calculus AB & BC Exams Formatted?

Despite covering different material, both AP Calculus exams share the same format and structure. The AP Calculus AB and BC exams are each three hours and 15 minutes long and have two sections: multiple-choice and free-response. Both of these sections are divided into two parts, depending on if a calculator is permitted.

Lasting one hour and 45 minutes, the multiple-choice section makes up 50% of your total AP Calculus score. In the first part of the multiple-choice section, students must complete 30 questions in 60 minutes without using a calculator. In the second part of the multiple-choice section, students can use a graphic calculator to solve 15 questions in 35 minutes.

The free-response section makes up the other 50% of your total score and lasts one hour and 30 minutes. In part A, students are permitted to use a calculator and must complete two questions within 30 minutes. For part B, students must solve four questions in 60 minutes without using a calculator.

How are the AP Calculus AB & BC Exams Scored?

For the multiple-choice section, you earn 1 point for each question you answer correctly. This means you can earn up to 45 points for this section. No points are deducted for incorrect answers, so you should provide an answer for every question!

For the free-response section, each of the six questions is worth 9 points, allowing you to earn up to 54 points. After your points are added up for each of your sections, your AP Calculus AB score is converted to the standard AP scoring scale 1-5.
