About the GRE
The GRE General Test is an admissions test used by many graduate school programs. The test is comprised of three sections: a Verbal Reasoning section, a Quantitative Reasoning section, and an Analytical Writing section. Test-takers will receive a score for each of these three sections. The Verbal section and the Quantitative section are scored on a scale of 130 to 170. The Analytical Writing section receives a score from 0 to 6.
The Verbal Reasoning section tests your reading comprehension, contextual analysis skills, vocabulary, and ability to synthesize information. The Quantitative Reasoning section is a math section that includes arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. The Analytical Writing section requires you to write two responses, one in which you advance your own argument about an issue, and one in which you analyze an existing argument.
The GRE’s Computer-Adaptive Format
The GRE is a computer-delivered test. For the Verbal Reasoning and the Quantitative Reasoning sections, the test will adapt its questions based on the student’s performance. Depending on well a student scores on the first round of questions, the test will provide a second round of questions that is either easier or harder in difficulty.
The format of the GRE makes it especially important to prepare for the test, as too many wrong answers early on can significantly limit your potential to earn a high score on the section overall.
